Philatelic News

Worldwide news about postage stamps, stamp collecting, philatelic literature, exhibitions, auctions and more!

One of the rarest and most sought after stamps ever produced is up for sale and expected to fetch over half a million pounds. The plate 77 Penny Red has been dubbed the ‘Holy Grail of philately’ and is one of just nine examples of the stamp ever recorded.

Although millions of Penny Reds were printed between 1841 and 1879, a number of plates were never used due to technical faults. Flaws in plate number 77 meant the stamp’s perforations were lined up incorrectly, so all of the test sheets were destroyed. But at least one sheet was released into circulation by mistake - making the 77 every stamp collector’s dream.

Dealer Stanley Gibbons heralds it as the ‘most valuable single stamp’ the company has ever had for sale in their 156 year history, with a value of around £550,000. (…) Spokesman Vince Cordell said: ‘This example has graced some of the finest stamp collections ever formed and is not only a magnificent exhibition piece but one of the great rarities of Great Britain and world philately.

At Yew Dell Gardens in Crestwood, Kentucky, near Louisville, the Postal Service issues a Garden of Love definitive stamp (Forever® priced at 44 cents), in 10 designs in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. The designs depict an abstract garden of bright flowers, a butterfly, and a strawberry and doves, interlaced with vines that run from one stamp to another. Each prominent element of the design is in the shape of a heart. The deep blue background is reminiscent of a brilliant summer sky. The word “Love” sits atop each stamp. This issuance is a continuation of the popular Love series introduced by the Postal Service in 1973. Jose Ortega of New York City, New York, and Toronto, Canada, illustrated the stamps under the direction of Derry Noyes, Washington, DC.

The Alhambra and the Generalife in Granada were declared “World Heritage” by UNESCO in 1984. The Alhambra features in this souvenir sheet depicting one of its beautifully decorated rooms, whilst the circle-shaped stamp resembles a 2 € coin with an image of the Patio de los Leones in the centre. In 1994 the declaration of World Heritage was extended to the neighbourhood of the Albaicin.

The Alhambra is located on the hill of al-Sabika, on the left bank of the Darro River, east of Granada. It is recorded that in 889 Sawwar ben Hamdun seeked refuge in his fortress from the fighting going on all over the Caliphate of Cordoba, which then belonged to the kingdom of Granada. In the 13th century with the arrival of Mohammed I, the first Nazari monarch, the Alhambra became a royal residence, marking the beginning of its splendour. The consecutive monarchs expanded and enrich the compound with the construction of new palace rooms, baths, towers, gates and extensions of the walls.

The complex of the Alhambra, Generalife and Albaicín forms a complete and unique heritage which is especially representative of the architecture that emerged during the long period of the Arab rule in Spain. The Alhambra besides the Alcazaba, includes within the city walls the Nazaríes palaces defended by the towers of Vela, Armas, Pólvora, Sultana , Homenaje, Damas, Oratorio, Picos, Cadí, Infantas, Cautiva, Siete Suelos, Agua and many others. Within the complex, there are other important buildings such as the Palacio de Carlos V, a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture, designed by architect Pedro Machuca and built over the ruins of part of the previous buildings. It was commissioned by Emperor Charles V so that he could admire and enjoy the spirit and wonders of the Alhambra.

This year’s central theme for the annual EUROPA issue, announced by the Association of European Public Postal Operators PostEurop, is “Forests”.

An alluvial forest is a hardwood forest found on low levees, ridges and terraces with a high level of underground water within the floodplains of streams and rivers. This type of forest grows in areas that are slightly elevated above floodplain swamp and are usually flooded for a portion of the growing season. Formerly a normal biotope, it has been disappearing with the growing number of river realignment projects.
The largest alluvial forest in the Czech Republic grows at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers. Residual alluvial forests can be found in the area of the confluence of the Labe and Cidlina rivers (Libický Alluvial Forest Natural Reserve), and on the banks or in the headwater area of the Morava and Dyje rivers.
The presence of a stream or river, or a high level of underground water leads to a lower amount of oxygen in the soil and subsequent reduction processes. The products of the processes contribute to the typical bluish colour and special smell of the so-called gley soil.
Primary trees found include poplar (Populus L.), oak (Quercus L.) , ash (Fraxinus L.), elm (Ulmus L.), alder (Alnus L.), willow (Salix L.), lime tree (Tilia L.). Shrubs and small trees, such as cherry (Prunus serotina), honeysuckle (Lonicera), cornel (Cornel), viburnum (Viburnum), elder (Sambucus), are present at places with more light.
The mix of plants found in alluvial forests depends on the shadow prevailing in the lower layers of the forest. Creepers, such as hop vine (Humulus lupulus), try to penetrate into the upper layers. Other plants, such as ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea), bramble (Rubus), catchweed bedstraw (Galium aparine), spread by vining stems.
Light-demanding herbs flowering before leaves bud on the surrounding trees give the forest so-called spring aspect. Spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum), snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis), lesser celandine (Ficaria verna), yellow star-of-Bethlehem (Gagea lutea), starwort (Stellaria holostea), lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis), early-dog violet (Viola reichenbachiana), hollowroot (Corydalis cava), are among the herbs most commonly encountered in spring. A mix of grass species and other shadow-demanding herbs such as wild angelica (Angelica sylvestris), true forget-me-not (Myosotis palustris), yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus), enchanter’s-nightshade (Circaea lutetiana), European birthwort (Aristolochia clematitis), moneywort (Lysimachia nummularia), creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens), common comfrey (Symphytum officinale), common figwort (Scrophularia nodosa), touch-me-not balsam (Impatiens noli-tangere) , cover the ground in summer.
The patchy mossy underground tends to cover maximum 10% of the forest floor.
Soil fauna in alluvial forests is relatively rare due to the high amount of water in the soil. Earthworms and harvestmen are among the most common species. Amphibians are frequent in wet areas. Birds typical of alluvial forest include yellow throat, different species of warbler, chaffinch, whitwing, robin, starling, stork, silver and night herons, bee eater, buzzard, kite, hawk, falcon, sea eagle.

The Project Mercury and MESSENGER Mission stamps were designed by Donato Giancola of Brooklyn, New York, under the direction of Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia. A three-time winner of the Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist, Giancola is known for his cover illustrations for science fiction authors, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Phillip K. Dick, and Arthur C. Clarke. His luminous works for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have received recognition through more than a dozen awards.

Giancola based the stamp designs on NASA photographs and images. The Project Mercury stamp depicts Shepard, the Mercury capsule Freedom 7, and the Redstone launching rocket. The MESSENGER Mission stamp depicts the MESSENGER spacecraft in orbit around the planet Mercury.

Tiffany wrote the first comprehensive book on the stamps of the United States. It was first published in French by the Belgian dealer, J.-B. Moens: Les Timbres des Etats-Unis d’Amerique (in three parts, 1883). He subsequently revised and expanded it, and it was published in 1887 as History of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America.

Gutenberg Project published the full text of 1887 edition. Read it online.
